THE COMPETITION

FOTOHOLICS PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR

Fotoholics Photographer of the Year is an open competition for amateur and professional image makers using any brand of camera.    The competition aims to promote and celebrate excellence in photography and to encourage photographers of all ages and experience levels to share their creativity and passion for photography.

THE CATEGORIES

PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR

Fotoholics Photographer of the Year is an open competition for amateur and professional image makers, aged 18 and over.    Winning images for this category will be selected from the Black and White, Street, Landscape and Project categories.  Direct entry to this category is not available.

YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR

Fotoholics Young Photographer of the Year is an open competition for image makers, aged under 18.    Images of any genre can be entered and colour or black and white images are acceptable.

STREET PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR

Fotoholics Street Photographer of the Year is an open competition for amateur and professional image makers.    Images can include candid scenes captured in a public space.  Colour or black and white images are acceptable.

LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR

Fotoholics Landscape Photographer of the Year is an open competition for amateur and professional image makers.    Images can include any outdoor scene including cityscapes and seascapes.  Colour or black and white images are acceptable.

BLACK & WHITE PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR

Fotoholics Black and White Photographer of the Year is an open competition for amateur and professional image makers.    Images of any genre can be submitted, but must be a black and white format.

PROJECT PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR

Fotoholics Project Photographer of the Year is an open competition for amateur and professional image makers.    Up to 5 images can be entered in to this category as one submission.  The images must relate to the theme of unity.  Colour or black and white images are acceptable.

THE WINNERS

Three finalists from each category will be announced via a live stream on the Fotoholics Facebook page in October.  The planned Fotoholics exhibition has been postponed and will be rescheduled for an appropriate date in the future. 

The winners of each category will be announced and all prizes awarded by Olympus, Nisi Filters and Manfrotto will be presented during this live stream. 

All winning images and a selection of shortlisted images, will be exhibited on the Fotoholics website.

THE JUDGES

Our competition judging panel is made up of four of the most recognisable UK based photographers, photography bloggers and writers.

Tom Stoddart
TOM STODDART
Tom Stoddart has enjoyed a long and varied career, during which he has witnessed such international events as the war in Lebanon, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the election of President Nelson Mandela, the bloody siege of Sarajevo and the wars against Saddam Hussein in Iraq. In the summer of 2012, Perspectives, an outdoor retrospective exhibition in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross was viewed by 225,000 visitors at London’s South Bank. Established as one of the worlds most respected photojournalists, Stoddart is represented by, and works closely with Getty Images, to produce powerful photo-essays on the serious world issues of our time.
Peter Dench
PETER DENCH
Dench has over 20 years experience in the advertising, editorial, corporate, portraiture and film making fields of image making. His achievements include the World Press Photo award in the People in the News Stories category and participation in the World Press Joop Masterclass. Football’s Hidden Story, a FIFA sponsored reportage comprising 26 stories across 20 different countries, received six global accolades. Dench is a Visionary for Olympus cameras.
Amy Davies
AMY DAVIES
Amy is a highly respected journalist and photographer, as well as being a Features Editor for Amateur Photographer magazine. Amy has written for Amateur Photographer, Stuff, Wired, T3, Digital Photographer, Digital Camera, TechRadar, Trusted Reviews, ePhotozine and Photography Blog.  She also produces her own photography blog. Amy was a member of our judging panel in 2019.
MATT HART
Matt is a highly-acclaimed street and commercial photographer, blogger and is the Director and driving-force behind Fotoholics. Now semi-retired, Matt splits his time between organising the Fotoholics community, photography and his passion for walking his dog Jake. Matt was a member of our judging panel in 2019.

THE PRIZES

All 2020 competition images selected as winning images, including those chosen as runner up and highly commended images, and a selection of shortlisted images will feature in the Fotoholics Photographer of the Year book, published later in the year.

To enter the Fotoholics Photographer of the Year competition, you must first purchase an entry pass.  Once you have done this you will be supplied with you own unique competition id which you will use to submit your entries using the form below.  All entrants, including those for the Young Photographer of the Year category, must obtain a competition id, prior to completing your competition submission.

COMPETITION TERMS & CONDITIONS

1 About the Competition
1.1 The Fotoholics Photographer of the Year Competition is owned and run by Fujiholics Limited (known hereafter as “Fujiholics”).
1.2 The competition is a multi-category, annual competition aimed at amateur and professional photographers using any brand of photography equipment.
1.3 The aim of the competition is to promote high quality and creative photographic images that can be shared to a wider community.
1.4 There is a fee to enter the Fotoholics Photographer of the Year Competition, this fee is waived for entrants who are aged 17 and under on the closing date of the competition.

1.5.1 Photographer of the Year
1.5.2 Young Photographer of the Year
1.5.3 Street Photographer of the Year
1.5.4 Landscape Photographer of the Year
1.5.5 Black and White Photographer of the Year
1.5.6 Project Photographer of the Year

1.6 Dates
1.6.1 Competition opens for entries on 12 noon, Sunday 05 April 2020.
1.6.2 The deadline for the entries is 10am, Friday 28 August 2020.
1.6.3 Winners and runners-up of all categories will be announced and exhibited at the Fotoholics Blackpool Exhibition in October 2020.

2 Conditions of Entry
2.1 All entries must be submitted through the Fotoholics Photographer of the Year Competition website.
2.2 Entrants are permitted to enter up to 5 images to the competition via the website on each submission. Entrants are permitted to make multiple submissions, subject to paying the entry fee.
2.2.1 Individuals entering the Project category may submit up to 9 images in total (up to 5 for the Project category and up to 4 images in other categories)
2.3 Entries must be submitted digitally. Scanned negatives are accepted but must meet the criteria of digital image file requirements.
2.4 Image entry file size must not exceed 4MB and is recommended to be no more than 1200 pixels on the longest length.
2.5 A high-resolution image with a minimum of 6MB, preferably over 10MB, will be requested if entries are shortlisted and entrants may be disqualified at the judge’s discretion if high resolution images are not provided when requested.
2.6 Images must not include watermarks, borders, signatures or any other mark intended to identify the entrant.
2.7 Black and white images are eligible for all categories.
2.8 Images may be entered to more than one category.

3 Eligibility
3.1 The Fotoholics Photographer of the Year Competition is open to all – apart from anyone associated with the competition including Directors of Fujiholics Limited (and their partners and family), members of the Fujiholics administrative team and judges.
3.2 The entrant must be the original image creator and solely hold the copyright.
3.3 Images must not be licenced or disposed of any rights that will conflict with the competition. Images that have been made available on stock libraries and that may have gained publicity from this may be disqualified at the judges’ discretion
3.4 Images that have won or been commended or received notable publicity in any major competition before the submission deadline or judging will be disqualified at the judges’ discretion.
3.5 It is the entrant’s responsibility to ensure that all necessary permissions are obtained from any person featured in a photograph.
3.6 Entrants for the Young Photographer of the Year category must 17 years or younger on the day the competition closes. Fujiholics reserves the right to request evidence of age following the submission of an entry.
3.7  Entrants for the Young Photographer of the Year category, must seek and gain permission to submit an entry, from a parent, guardian or carer.  Fujiholics reserves the right to disqualify any entry if it is not satisfied that the appropriate permission has not be gained.
3.8 Entrants must be resident in the United Kingdom on the day the competition closes.

4  Categories
4.1    Photographer of the Year
4.1.1   This is an open category and the winning and runner up images will be drawn from those submitted to the Street, Landscape, Black and White and Project categories, subject to the conditions set out in 2 and 3 being met.
4.2    Young Photographer of the Year
4.2.1   This is an open category and any images can be submitted, subject to the conditions set out in 2 and 3 being met.

4.3    Street Photographer of the Year
4.3.1    This category is restricted to images taken that depict a candid scene within a public space.  Entries that depict a staged scene will be excluded from the competition.

4.4  Landscape Photographer of the Year
4.4.1  This category is restricted to images taken in an outdoor setting that feature the landscape as the primary subject matter.

4.5  Black and White Photographer of the Year
4.5.1  This category is restricted to images produced using black and white reproduction techniques.  Images can be tinted or include an overall colour tone.

4.3    Project Photographer of the Year
4.3.1    This category is restricted to a single submission of a series of up to five images that are related to each other using the theme of unity as the subject matter.

5    Ethics
5.1    Digital adjustments that maintain the integrity of the image are allowed.
5.2    It is not permitted to make any major physical change to the image.
5.3    Accepted digital adjustments include dodging and burning, changes to tone and contrast and cropping, as well as High Dynamic Range imaging techniques, stitched panoramas and focus stacking.
5.4    Fujiholics may request the RAW file(s) or original camera jpeg(s) for any shortlisted image, if it deems that image does not follow the restrictions on digital manipulation and reserves the right to disqualify any image that it feel lacks authenticity.

6    Judging
6.1   A panel of judges will be appointed by Fujiholics to judge a shortlist of entries from each category.
6.2    The competition judges will then choose from the selected shortlisted entries, to select winners of each category.
6.3    In addition, second place awards may be made; and where considered appropriate by judges ‘highly commended’ and ‘commended’.
6.4    Judges hold the right to move entries to another category.
6.5    The judges reserve the right not to make any award if, in their opinion, none of the entries meet the required standard.
6.6    The decision of the judges is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

7    Winners
7.1    The winners of each category will be chosen from the shortlisted entries.
7.2    The winners will be announced during Fotoholics Blackpool Exhibition in October 2020.

8    Prizes
8.1    Prizes will be awarded to winners and runners-up of each single category.
8.2    The prizes are non-transferable.
8.3    Fujiholics reserves the right to substitute the whole or part of any listed prize with an alternative of equal monetary value (but the entrant shall not have any right to demand this).
8.4    The prizes must be claimed within three months of the competition winners being announced or will be forfeited.

9    Copyright and Usage
9.1    Entrants remain the copyright holder to any images submitted by themselves.
9.2    Awarded entrants agree to grant Fujiholics and its partners and sponsors to a nonexclusive irrevocable licence to reproduce, enlarge, publish and exhibit for any purpose related to the competition in any medium, including print and digital.
9.3   This includes, but is not restricted to; exhibiting and for use in press and on websites and social media.
9.4    The entrants agree to Fujiholics free usage sublicensing the shortlisted images for press articles or any other external communications related to the competition.
9.5    After the winners have been announced entries will be deleted, apart from those that have been shortlisted.
9.6    Fujiholics will try to ensure the photographers will be credited on all mediums, but in the event of inadvertent omission of the credit, the photographer agrees that Fujiholics are not to be liable.
9.7    The entrant is responsible for any claim made by a third party against the submission.

10    Disclaimer
10.1    The information given in these Terms and Conditions is correct, but Fujiholics reserves the right to change any of it without prior notice. By entering the competition, entrants will be deemed to have agreed to be bound by these Terms and Conditions. Any breach of these Terms by an entrant will void their entry. If a breach has occurred, but is discovered after the award of a prize, then Fujiholics may require the return of that prize.
10.2  Fujiholics cannot accept liablility for any loss, damage, injury or disappointment incurred as a result of participation in, or other involvement with, the competition, to the fullest extent allowed by law.
10.3 Proof of electronic submission is not held as proof of receipt by Fujiholics.
10.4  Fujiholics cannot be held liable for any emails, sent by Fujiholics, that do not arrive due to the entrant’s email security settings, restrictions placed by their Internet Service Provider or any other reason.
10.5  Fujiholics cannot be held responsible for damage to any computers or other technical equipment relating to, or resulting from participation in the Competition or from the download of materials connected to the Competition.

11    Data Protection

11.1    In entering the Fotoholics Photographer of the Year Competition, you agree to Fujiholics using your details to process your application, only.
11.2    By entering, you also agree that if selected as a winner of any prize, Fujiholics may share your details with any potential future sponsor for the purpose of publishing the details of all winners (including the winning images), only.
